KENDALL LEWIS Pan Player, Arranger |
One of the finest players of steelband music who grew up on the Green Hill district of Diego Martin, is Kendall Lewis, a Police Officer - yes, but an excellent musician.
He has been responsible for the high sense of discipline and organisation in the Merrytones steelband of Diego Martin.
Kendall, familiarly known as 'Zal', grew up in pan. His cousin, Arti Lewis, was the captain of Merrytones. Many of Kendal's families are members of Merrytones.
Having a good ear and skill did not satisfy Kendall and he did what many people of the time found strange - he decided to study music formally.
He learnt his music from the late Majorie Padmore, and John Harvey, and received his 0-Level Certificate in music therein.
He played with Invaders on the road from 1965 to 1970. But in 1972; took the role of arranger when Merrytones [who] took part in Panorama for the first time.
In 1972, he also arranged for the band when they placed third in the Music Festival.
In 1973 the band placed third, in the "B" Class, with the selection Jupiter Symphony by Mozart.
Kendall served at one time as the trustee of Pan Trinbago, for two terms, and has been a willing tutor to panmen all over.
